Holiday Party Forecast for Sunday, December 17

The neighborhood holiday party is a great way to join in the spirit of the holidays and meet your neighbors.  It's a pot-luck affair, so come and bring a favorite dish to share.  The neighborhood association will provide all the plates, napkins, utensils, soft drinks, and the like.
Our last Holiday Party was lots of fun and a gourmet's delight.  Folks brought the most delicious food one could imagine, and this party promises to be even better.

Entertainment!

We want to put together some entertainment for the occasion, and you may be able to help.  If you, your kids, or someone you know has a talent, whether it's playing a musical instrument, singing, dancing, juggling, presenting puppetry or magic, even performing a high-wire act, or whatever, call June Lundy, Holiday Party chairperson, at 253-3697

Raffle!

There will be raffle prizes. In fact, you can help by donating raffle items of any kind (such as home-baked or handmade items, gift certificates, garden items, and so on). All will be appreciated and it makes a party that much more fun. Brenda Loman (256-7594) is coordinating raffle prizes.

Bears Welcome Too!

This would be a great opportunity to bring a teddy bear or soft toy to contribute to the Phoenix Police Department's program for abused children.

Mark Your Calendar!

Watch for more details in our December issue. In the meantime, be sure to mark your calendar for Sunday, December 17, from 2 - 5 p.m. at the Valley Garden Center, right across 15th Avenue. Plan to join us, bring your family or a guest, and help spread some holiday cheer.

Made Possible by You

A big Thank You to each of the 51 neighborhood families (so far) who have contributed to the Fairview Place Donation Drive. Your support helps the association meet expenses. For example, it keeps The Outlook coming to your door on a monthly basis, keeps our website on the Internet, and helps defray the costs of neighborhood events such as the Holiday Party. Your generosity makes a difference and is greatly appreciated.

Historic District Coalition News

Gerry and Marge McCue
The Phoenix Historic District Coalition met on October 19. There was discussion about the article, "Someone is stealing my neighborhood," which was also published in this newsletter last month.
The article addressed the responsibilities and benefits of living in an historic neighborhood and the fact that some homeowners are making changes which have a negative impact on the historic integrity and ambiance. Such changes threaten the historic designation.
Other historic neighborhoods have printed the article in their newsletters, and folks have responded positively to the idea of producing an informational booklet about living in an historic neighborhood. The planning and writing of the booklet are now under way. Some topics to be included are:
     - A brief history of older neighborhoods and reasons for saving them
     - Appropriate rehabilitation suggestions for exterior and interior work
     - A list of resources including building materials and landscapers
     - Before and after photographs
     - The value of streetscapes
     - A "palette" of appropriate landscape designs; for example, what grows well in our area and is suitable on small city lots
     - Humor and cartoons to make reading more interesting and informative
These are some ideas from which to start. We need your ideas too. Please let the project group know your thoughts by contacting Helen Prior of the F. Q. Story neighborhood. Call her at 256-7009, or send e-mail to h e l e n @ p r i e r  r e a l t y . c  o m   .
Coalition meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at 6:15 p.m. at the Capitol Coffee Co. at 1722 W. Van Buren. See the panel on the back page of the newsletter (print version) for more information.

It's The Berries!

That's an old saying, but living in Fairview Place sometimes really is the berries, thanks to our healthy palms. However, that is sometimes a dangerous thing.  Palm trees are dropping their berries now, and they make walking on the sidewalk messy and a bit hazardous.
Did you know that city code holds you responsible for the area in front of your house to the center of the street and from the back of your house to the center of the alley?
The Outlook called the city to ask when the next palm-tree trimming would take place, and we learned that we are not due for another eight or nine months.
In the past, some neighbors have joined together and hired someone to trim several trees on their block and obtained a very fair group price.  Because our city has grown so rapidly we do not have the luxury of frequent tree trimming these days, so sweeping up debris or paying for an interim trim may be helpful on your block now.
Trees in the parkway other than those tall palms should be trimmed up high enough so that branches are not in the faces of passersby.
Fairview folks like to walk in the neighborhood, so let's be thoughtful neighbors and make sure the area in front of our homes is clean and safe.

The Fairview Place Website Lives!

After about two years in limbo, our neighborhood's website is back on-line, and it's completely new.
Fairview Place was one of the first neighborhoods with its own website, thanks to the volunteer efforts of former resident Richard Fox. Unfortunately, when he moved away from Fairview Place, the website was orphaned. (In 1990, Richard also helped found our neighborhood association.)
Now the site is back.  Thanks for visiting here at www.fairviewplace.org .
Beginning this month, this newsletter will be available in text-only format on the website at about the same time it is distributed to your door.
Also, you'll find color sketches of about 20 Fairview Place historic homes.  Now your friends in other parts of the country can take a look at our fine and lovely neighborhood, and begin to understand why you live here.  Let us know what you think of the site.  We have plans to add numerous features as time goes by, but you may have an idea that has not occurred to us:  So tell us!

Kudos to Don Zastoupil

Don Zastoupil, a noted ceramic artist who lives in Fairview Place, has for several years participated in Empty Bowls, an event to heighten awareness of World Hunger Day. This year, Don created and donated 150 ceramic bowls which were sold at the Arizona Center to hold pasta and bread lunches bought by donors. Valley potters gave their wares to the cause. The food was donated by Lombardi's Restaurant. The money raised went to Waste Not, a local organization which gathers food from restaurants to feed needy persons.

Quarterly Bulk Trash Collection

www.cityofphoenix.org  (garbage and recycling info)
The next pick-up date for large items is December 4. The earliest put-out date is November 18. Be sure to place items in back of your own property.
The city does NOT pick up: household hazardous waste (see BOPA Collections, below); construction materials, including bricks, concrete, lumber; refrigerators; tires; auto parts; or grass, leaves, weeds, and other clippings unless bagged and tied.

   BOPA Collection

BOPA (batteries, oil, paint, and antifreeze) collection event:
December 7, 8 and 9 at Encanto Park
This is your most convenient opportunity to clean out your sheds and garages and get rid of toxic materials that are not permitted in the weekly trash collections.

   Recycle Phone Books

Depending on when you read this, there may still be time left to recycle old telephone books. Take them to the recycling bins provided at Safeway markets through Friday, November 10. (The nearest Safeway is located at 7th Avenue and Osborne Road.)

The Outlook newsletter

Changing of the Guard

Some of the Fairview Place newsletter staff has changed.
Jennifer Johnson, who has done an outstanding job for the past two years, has turned over editorial duties to Patrick Neary, who is resuming that position.
Carl Wright, advertising manager, has transferred his responsibilities to Jocelyn Sheppard.
A heartfelt Thank You to Jennifer and Carl for stepping up when the newsletter called for help. Both have been generous with their contributions of time, energy and expertise. We are fortunate to have neighbors who are willing to volunteer their time and talents.
And Thank You to all the other folks who produce and deliver the Outlook to your door each month.  The newsletter helps provide information to you and your neighbors.
